That growth has allowed us to bring nearly a thousand new journalists to The Times in recent years - roughly half to the newsroom and half through our acquisitions of Wirecutter, Serial and The Athletic. Those subscribers anchor a digital business that is growing, after years of hard work from every part of the company. Today, nearly 10 million subscribers rely on The Times to help them navigate this consequential moment. The unprecedented number of subscribers we had at the end of the year testifies to the value of this kind of journalism. And in this increasingly polarized era, fewer institutions are engaged in the difficult work of searching for the truth with an open mind and a first order commitment to independence, fairness and accuracy. The information ecosystem has been overtaken by misinformation, propaganda, punditry and clickbait, making it harder than ever to sort fact from fiction. That is especially important at a time when what we offer - independent journalism of the highest quality - is increasingly rare and increasingly needed. One of the benefits of the State of The Times is it gives us an opportunity to step back from the demands of our busy days - from Slack notifications, Google meeting alerts and story deadlines - to take in what we’re doing and why it matters to our readers and to the world. This mission is rooted in our belief that great journalism has the power to make each reader’s life richer and more fulfilling, and all of society stronger and more just. Our mission is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. I’m honored to start the day, as always, with a tour through last year’s best journalism. Thank you to all our speakers, everyone who put today together, and thanks to all of you for being here. Colleagues are going to talk about our journalism, our business strategy, and our plans for the year ahead. Good morning and welcome to the State of The Times.
